General Press Release
The Electrisave is an innovative device designed to encourage a reduction in electricity consumption in homes and offices. 2006 saw the company celebrate its first successful year in business in the UK.
Since the Electrisave went on sale via a dedicated website in 2005 sales have consistently increased every month exceeding the Leeds-based company's expectations.
Now, due to popular demand as well as being available to buy through the website, a number of independent electrical retailers throughout the UK have been selected to sell the Electrisave with High Street names planning to come on board in 2007.
The portable monitor allows users to manage their electricity usage in a currency they understand- pounds and pence- and was the brain child of Australian inventor, Ross Halliwell. The device combines a simple clip-on sensor, which can be installed in any household or office metre box, and a portable monitor. The monitor displays in real-time how much electricity is being used in pence per hour and is sensitive enough to record the savings made by switching off even a 20 watt light.
The Electrisave was also short-listed for a prestigious business award earlier this year and has been featured on the BBC's Newsnight programme as part of their series about ethical living.
Local councils, housing companies and large power companies all over the UK have given their support to the Electrisave with a range of initiatives planned for 2007.
Coventry, Warwickshire and Worcestershire Councils combined forces in October 2006 to encourage the one and a half million people in their areas to turn off unwanted lights and appliances left on stand-by which costs an estimated £23 million a year in homes alone.
The 'Switch It Off' campaign ran through October and culminated in 'Switch it Off Week' at the end of the month. Families in the different areas were provided with Electrisaves to help them keep a diary of their electricity consumption which was then used as feedback for the individual councils.
Housing companies, including south east-based Michael Shanly Homes, are also introducing the Electrisave into new builds to encourage home owners to be more environmentally aware. The devices will be used initially in new homes in Broxbourne in Hertfordshire, Gerrards Cross in Buckinghamshire and Amersham in Buckinghamshire. Plans are in place to roll out the Electrisave across more new developments in the coming months.
And npower announced earlier this year that it would be conducting a year long trial of the Electrisave to help the company better understand consumer behaviour and to inform its strategy on 'smart metering'.
npower also offered the device free of charge to new customers in a bid to encourage them to look more closely at their energy usage.
The Electrisave business is managed by father and daughter team, John Lane and Melissa Hardy.
Melissa, operations director for Electrisave, commented: "When we decided to introduce the Electrisave into the UK, after seeing how much electricity could be saved, we never imagined quite how popular the device would become straight away. We always knew that it would become a must-have device as people are now much more environmentally aware but sales and support for the Electrisave have certainly exceeded our expectations.
"We're constantly receiving positive feedback from our customers who are continually reporting savings of up to 25% on their electricity bills which can only be beneficial for both the consumer and the environment. 2006 has proved really busy as independent retailers have started to stock the Electrisave and this is something we plan to extend in the coming 12 months."
